101 PUZZLES

It was very uplifting to receive so many appreciative comments along with the entries, which came from as far afield as Edinburgh and Derbyshire. “This is the best quiz I have ever attempted”. “Great fun for all the family”. “It was a wonderful icebreaker amongst new friends.” There were also several apologies, “for not doing very many”, “sorry the cat ripped it a little” and “it got rather wet and muddy”!

Thank you to Joanna Allwood who helped prepare the quiz and organised the printing. Thank you to all who assisted in the selling of 273 copies and to the people who sent in solutions. Many entrants gave reasonable alternative answers, but “ours” were spelt correctly and did not just sound right, (Peter rather than Wayne), or fitted the dictionary definition clue perfectly, (Mentor rather than Consul,) etc. All “our” answers were obtained by at least one entry. The most difficult questions being No32: Pueblo and No76: Joseph, which is a long cloak with a cape, whereas a Mac or Mackintosh is a waterproof of any design! There were also some ingenious alternative solutions to the dingbats, “we’re confused” for No101 being my favourite.

The outright winner with 94 correct is Mrs. Beth Lewis from Wiltshire, who will receive the first prize of £30. Mrs. Eileen Bridge from Ightham and Mrs. Margaret Everest from Chiddingstone tied for second place achieving 90 correct answers and each receive £15. So thank you for helping to raise £228 for the Chiddingstone churches. I hope it proved to be an enjoyable challenge.
